The music of legendary jazz composer Thelonious Monk will be performed by Star People at the Taylor Theater on Saturday, February 24, 2018. This is the first of six programs in the Jazz at the Taylor concert series, produced by Kathleen Rooney in collaboration with the Kenan Center. The show begins at 7:30 PM in the Taylor Theater, a 153-seat converted carriage house on the Center’s campus, providing an intimate, club-like atmosphere. The concert features two full sets of music with refreshments available.
Star People, which performs regularly at Buffalo’s Pausa Art House, features Bobby Militello on alto saxophone, Tim Clarke on trumpet, Brian Tervo on tenor sax, pianist George Caldwell, bassist Bill Staebell, and John Bacon on drums.
Thelonious Sphere Monk was born in North Carolina in 1917 and moved to New York City when he was four years old. By the 1940s he was playing jazz at the famed Harlem nightclub, Minton’s Playhouse, where he and other musicians of the era developed the revolutionary jazz style called Bebop. Some of Monk’s most well-known compositions include “Round Midnight,” “Ruby My Dear,” “Well, You Needn’t,” and “Monk’s Mood.” After recording with a number of labels, in the 1960s recorded with Columbia Records and appeared on the cover of Time. His last appearance was in 1976 at the Newport Jazz Festival. Monk died in Weehawken, NJ in 1982.
